Located just outside of Odessa, TX, 3 miles South of I-20. It was very easy to locate, and is well worth the visit if you are in the area. Unlike the Barringer Crater in AZ, this is not a family owned cash grab. It's free admission, has a small, but interesting museum, and they rely heavily on donations and sales to maintain the place. The site actually has two impact craters, one which is completely filled in and one that is mostly filled. They have a footpath around the crater rim area with plenty of informational signs. As you leave the site, there are signs designating the bodies of our solar system. It's crazy to think about the scale of it. The inner rocky planets and sun were all located within about 200 feet of another, and three miles later there's Pluto.
It is very well dated, and the small museum has pieces of iron (meteorites) that were found there, they also have pieces of meteorites from other states and also from other countries. It was very good experience.
This is a very small meteor crater; now just a six foot depression. However it was once 100’ deep according to the visitor center. The models are Interesting and detailed, showing the upturned beds caused by the meteor impact and the layers of fill over time. It’s close to the freeway and a good place to stop and let the kids out of the car to learn a little science and burn off some energy. There is a concrete path around the crater. Considering it’s free I give it five stars. Recommended.
We drove for hours traveling back home. This was one of our stops.
Of course, nothing goes as planned with traffic.
We showed up 10 minutes before closing.
My mom can't walk long distances, but I wanted her to get out and stretch her legs for a few minutes. Even if it was to just get in the wheel chair and then back into the car.
I noticed someone walking to the gate. It was cold out.
My kid had already taken off to take pictures. We got her back up from the crator and put mom back into the car. It was literally 1 minute to close.
As I pulled up to the gate, I thanked the man for waiting.
He said he was giving us time. He would have stayed longer.
Surely wasn't his fault about traffic, and I do not know his life. He may have had something pressing to do.
There will be other days to go through it when we are not in such a rush.
I appreciated him, though.
Neat place..
$26 for RV
$28 / person to go on the guided tour.
It's a strenuous hike in a humid environment.
The cave itself is pretty amazing.
This old fat guy made it. Walk is slippery and can be hazardous. Must wear good slippery surface shoes. Once in you are committed.
The price is high but the tour was well conducted.
Small gift shop at the entrance with snacks available, no meals.
If you like this kind of stuff like me the museum has a very interesting rock collection. I had this on my to do list while visiting Odessa for the weekend from Dallas. A for where the meteor landed its still there but with vegetation growth and slowly filling due to winds out this way. All in all I am glad I stopped by.
Very interesting especially for stargazers and astronomy buffs. We had fun trying to imagine what it would have been like to witness an impact like that. Super nice staff. To help set expectations, this is not Hollywood, it's the real thing. The decades have mostly filled in the crater so you're not going to see a giant hole in the ground.
I really enjoyed it. Watch for snakes! A 4 foot rattle snake crossed the path just a head of us. The museum has meteors from many different places so your able to see the difference between them.
